Almendres Cromlech Megalithic Site - Évora
www.cialmendres.com
Situated around 12 km west of the city of Évora, Almendres Cromlech is the largest megalithic monument in the Iberian Peninsula, and one of the largest in Europe. Originating from the Early Neolithic era, the complex constitutes of a circular assembly of almost one hundred granite monoliths set in a clearing enveloped by cork trees. With their orientation closely associated with the solstice and equinox rituals and celebrations, the stones are standing in small groups or solitary, some of them with forms of carved drawings. Sometimes referred to as "Portuguese Stonehenge", Almendres Cromlech is together with the similar archaeological remains in the surrounding areas part of the so called "megalithic universe of Évora", yet its full heritage dimension remains to be explored.
